BRAKE REPAIR

The Scion tC is equipped with 4-wheel disc brakes and anti-lock braking system (ABS) as standard. The front brakes utilize vented rotors, while the rear brakes use solid rotors with the parking brake integrated into the hat. Several service tips exist for maintaining the brakes on a Scion tC, including proper rotor runout, pad shim installation, and rear brake service.

Key Features and Maintenance Tips:

4-Wheel Disc Brakes:

The Scion tC uses disc brakes on all four wheels, providing efficient stopping power.

Anti-lock Braking System (ABS):

ABS is a standard feature, helping to prevent wheel lock-up during hard braking and maintaining steering control.

Front Brakes:

The front brakes utilize vented rotors for better heat dissipation, and the minimum runout specification is 0.0020", according to Brake & Front End.

Rear Brakes:

The rear brakes use solid rotors, and the parking brake is integrated into the hat of the rotor.

Rotor Runout:

Proper rotor runout is crucial for smooth braking. The front rotor runout specification is 0.0020", and the rear runout should be around .002-.003".

Pad Shims:

OE brake pad shims are a two-piece design and should not be reused due to potential deflection and corrosion.

Brake Pad Wear Sensors:

The wear sensor is mounted on the inner brake pad and should be positioned on top.

Additional Information:

Aftermarket Upgrades:

Wilwood offers front brake kits for the Scion tC, including forged Superlite four piston calipers and oversized rotors.

Front vs. Rear Brakes:

While the front brakes handle the majority of the braking force, the rear brakes play a crucial role in stability and balance, especially on slippery surfaces.
